Review by Takemoto Motoya
Today, I went to the EC concert. Set list seemed unchanged. Guitar color seemed midnight blue, also the same. He still wore the Adidas jersey. It suited Clapton well.
At first, he did very polite bow to the audiences. And started gig without any word such as konbanwa-, do-mo, good evening.
I thought that the solo of I shot the Sheriff was spectacular as always. How would it be possible?! Audiences were saying like”so cool!” “Wonderful!” “what a good solo.” “I can’t find words” etc. after ended. I cried during his solo. It was so meaningful. Probably, Sheriff is the best song for him.
Through the concert, seemed Andy helped EC well. Of course, all of the members did but for me, his guitar seemed giving the whole performances some change. Probably, we are already used to the play of Paul and Chris, haha.
When the Crossroads came, because of Andy, seemed good balance for Solo Part, EC/Chris/Paul/Andy. Clapton’s play was stable, I cannot imagine he is 71.
“I will be there” was very nice, maybe the same role was given with Tears in heaven which was not on the list on this concert. I wanted Tears in heaven, but fortunately, it might be a good choice because there was a big earthquake in Kyushu area in Japan so he might have to avoid singing tears in heaven after all not to mention the death or some sadness as a performer. “Don’t be afraid, Don’t be afraid, I will be there” Such words has a meaning of encourage for Japanese. I understood what he was singing and almost cried again.
Wonderful tonight was performed a little different in a pop? way. Clapton did cutting and slide, it was good. Again, I was crying.
On Nobody Knows you, solo part were expanded a bit, first was piano Solo (Forgot,Chris or Paul), then Dirk next and then EC. This expansion was for Dirk, I think. I wanted to listen to Andy solo and then Clapton solo, haha.
On Cocaine, some of audiences were standing and enjoyed as always. Same scenery with the Albert hall live last year.
But the Solo part was different, Paul was first and then Chris. Chris had a that sweet start of solo this time. (Sweet part is the moment the backing suddenly volume down.) Finished with Audience’s “cocaine!!!” and Clapton’s response “Thank you!”
Encore was the same, but I guess that according to the DVD released the last year about Albert Hall, Andy was invited as a special guest but he was already there this time hehe.
I always feel that if Eric chose Change the world, it would be the most unforgettable nights for Japanese because the Change the world was so famous in Japan. Or Layla with Electric Guitar version can do? but we have to understand Clapton.
Circus was great. For Japanese, Pilgrim was the album wide known and Circus was on the special position on that album. We know that Clapton played with Andy on Unplugged concert so it was natural to be selected. But honestly, I expected some change on the style, but mostly, not that big change from unplugged. If Clapton played solo part, it might be great.
Michelle and Sharon were supporting with the great voice this time as well. I liked their chorus on the “I Will be there” and “Crossroad with Paul”, hehe. But I thought if Andy took the Chorus part of Paul, it might be interesting.
Anyway, I always feel that Eric Clapton is very very kind person because he makes the time to give the spot light to his band members, to Carrack, to Andy etc. I understand this is Clapton.
Anyway, I was so satisfied with the concert tonight. I was so happy to see Eric Clapton and I want to thank you very much to him and band members.
