This show will be Eric Clapton’s fourth concert in Singapore following performances in 1990, 2007 and 2011. Wonderful Tonight and Cocaine were both dropped from this evening’s set list.

It was a brilliant concert, as usual, but it may not have had the atmosphere of the Japanese ones? One or two rowdy fans spoiled the ambiance for me, though hopefully not for the band. Great versions of Tell the Truth, Honest Man and Crossroads. Having a worms-eye view of the band, from the front row, and seeing their finger work, made my night! On to Dubai for tomorrow’s concert.

Have to say not the best performance.. and very lackluster compared to Baloise Sessions. My wife whom has never seen EC live commented that he looked like he just did not want to be there, no emotion or interaction with the crowd. Maybe he misses the driving force of a second guitar such as AFL…in all honesty Disappointed!

I may have bought one of the best seats in the house, almost centre second row, but I must confess the concert was a bit of a let down. Eric was not really there playing to the packed house in Singapore. I am not sure if the cancelled Bangkok concert has anything to do with him losing momentum but he was really not totally charged up to deliver a brilliant show. This was evident when Eric actually messed up the ending of the third song, Tell The Truth where he overshot by half a bar. Eric being good natured and shyly apologetic shook his head to Nathan East and proceeded to the next song. Was there a problem with his amp ? He sounded good over the house system but it seemed he was not happy with what he was hearing on the stage. During the acoustic set, the technicians changed his amp.
The acoustic set went down quite well but Eric still felt distant to the audience regardless how they applauded him after each song.
Back to the electric set, Chris Stainton really shone on his amazing keys and Paul Carrack’s swelling hammond really sealed how great this band was. Also a nice change when Paul took over the vocals with Eric playing some tasty guitar improvisations to Paul’s songs.
I was hoping Eric would deliver more but on that day, he might have stepped back a little bit to let his side men shine through. He will be turning 69 years old at the end of this month and I am not much younger so perhaps I was probably expecting too much and not sure when will I catch him again after following his appearances for more than 15 times. Here’s to you Eric, Happy Birthday.
