Cream was inducted by ZZ Top (Frank Beard, Billy Gibbons, and Joseph "Dusty" Hill) at the annual ceremonies. This was the second time Clapton was inducted into the Hall of Fame. The year previous, he was inducted as a member of The Yardbirds. Others honoured at this ceremony were Ruth Brown, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Etta James, Frankie Lymon & The Teenagesrs, Van Morrison, Sly & The Family Stone, Dick Clark, Milt Gabler and Dinah Washington.

The event was filmed for television broadcast, but did not air. 

Eric Clapton was inducted as a solo artist into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2000, making him the only triple inductee.

Eric also attended the annual ceremonies in 1994 to induct The Band, in 1999 to perform in honour of Curtis Mayfield’s induction, and in 2005 to induct George "Buddy" Guy.
