Popanalia was one of the first French pop festivals. Planned to last 36 hours, it ended soon after it started as the the organizers did not have enough money to pay the artists. They only sold about 4,000 tickets and the site was crashed by 30,000 people. When the crowd was informed the event wouldn’t continue, the stage and equipment were burned in protest. The only performers who got to play were Joan Baez, Country Joe and Rare Bird.
The event poster billed Derek & the Dominos as “Eric Clapton” and Traffic as “Trafic avec Stevie Winwood.”
The poster for the concert listed the performers as Joan Baez, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Soft Machine, Traffic, Balls (a new trio with ex-Moody Blues singer Denny Laine, ex-Move guitarist Trevor Burton and former Plastic Ono Band drummer Alan White), Spencer Davis Group, Kevin Ayers & The Whole World, Alan Price, Daevid Allen’s Gong, Alice, Ame Son, Alan Jack Civilization, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Archie Shepp, Sonny Scharrock and Don Cherry. Arrival, Country Joe, MC5 and Edgar Broughton were added later, and it’s possible that Keith Tippett, Voyage, East of Eden, Champion Jack Dupree and Chris Barber were also added.
The event was cancelled before Derek & The Dominos slated performance.
