The Yardbirds

The Yardbirds

Eric Clapton’s first taste of international recognition came when he was asked to replace Anthony “Top” Topham as the lead guitarist for The Yardbirds.

The Yardbirds developed a loyal following and released several singles and a live debut album, Five Live Yardbirds during Eric Clapton’s tenure. While recording of The Yardbirds’ first single “For Your Love”, Clapton realized his days with the band were numbered as they were headed towards making more commercial music and he was a blues purist.

During Eric Clapton’s tenure, The Yardbirds’ lineup was:

Eric Clapton – guitar
Chris Dreja – guitar
Keith Relf – vocals, harmonica
Paul Samwell-Smith – bass
Jim McCarty – drums

After Eric left the band, he would be replaced by Jeff Beck on guitar.
