Sting (Gordon Sumner)

Gordon Matthew Sumner, popularly known as Sting, was born on 2 October 1951 in Wallsend, England. A vocalist and bassist, he came to fame with The Police. The band emerged in 1977 out of the punk movement.

The Police broke up in 1984 after scoring several worldwide hits including “Message In A Bottle” and “Roxanne”. Since then, Sting has enjoyed a successful solo career and has acted in several movies, including Quadrophenia and Dune.

Sting first shared a stage with Eric Clapton at The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball charity gig in 1981. The two recorded “It’s Probably Me” for the Lethal Weapon 3 Soundtrack in 1992. The song also appeared on Sting’s solo album, 10 Summoner’s Tales.

Sting has also done much work on behalf of human rights in conjunction with Amnesty International. He is also the founder of the Rainforest Foundation, which raises awareness about preserving the Brazilian Rainforest.
