Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood continued their 14-date jaunt around the United States with a stop in Philadelphia on 12 June 2009. Performing for a sold-out crowd at the Wachovia Center, it was another excellent show according to early reports from the venue.
One fan told Where’s Eric, "As good as night one was on Wednesday [10 June at Izod Center in New Jersey], this show was better. There were a few minor flubs – like EC and Steve missing their vocal cues in "Forever Man" – but overall, they really nailed this one." A long-time fan who travelled from the U.K. to see the show said, "The one thing that amazed me most was I saw a totally ‘different’ EC than at the RAH less than two weeks ago. He was good then, but when isn’t he. Tonight? I’ve never heard him like this. It was like travelling back in time to 1969 the way he played. Winwood really pushed him to an entirely different level. Amazing."
In an evening of highlights, the "bigger" highlights were "Little Wing","Voodoo Chile" and the encore, "Dear Mr. Fantasy" with Winwood absolutely shredding the closing solo on his stratocaster. Eric again performed "Tough Luck Blues" (the B-side to Big Maceo’s 1941 single, "Worried Life Blues") in the blues slot of the show.
Unlike at the 2008 Madison Square Garden Concerts, Chris Stainton is getting a bit more time in the spotlight with solos in "Low Down," "Well Alright," and of course, he absolutely owns the closing solo on "Cocaine". Along with Willie Weeks and Abe Laboriel, Jr., he anchors the band allowing both Eric and Steve to improvise.
The next stop is the Verizon Center in Washington D.C. on Saturday 13 June. There is no support. The show starts at 8:15 and concludes around 10:35 (although fans are wishing they could play for another few hours!)
