With striking intimacy and candor, Eric Clapton tells the story of his eventful and inspiring life in this poignant autobiography. More than a rock star, he is an icon, a living embodiment of the history of rock music. Well known for his reserve in a profession marked by self- promotion, flamboyance and spin, he now chronicles, for the first time, his remarkable personal and professional journeys.
Recognized as one of the most accomplished and influential guitarists in rock history, Clapton is a sixteen- time Grammy winner and the only triple inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of both the Yardbirds and Cream and as a solo artist).
In Clapton – The Autobiography, he chronicles his rise in the music world from his first taste of fame with the Yardbirds to the stint with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers that inspired fans to scrawl “Clapton Is God” on walls in London and New York. It continues through the various other groups including Cream, the preeminent rock trio of the sixties, the “super group” Blind Faith, and Derek And The Dominos, to Clapton ultimately finding his own voice as a solo performer. He also tells tales of hanging out with Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan, and working as a guest musician with notable groups such as the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.
Woven into Clapton’s tale of incredible commercial and artistic successes is a much more personal narrative. From unvarnished accounts of his deeply drug- addicted and hard- drinking years, to reflections on his failed marriage to George Harrison’s ex-wife Pattie Boyd (who years earlier had inspired “Layla,” Clapton’s classic ballad of unrequited love), and the devastating impact of the accidental death of his four-year-old son in 1991, Clapton describes his tumultuous life with striking honesty.
A rare self- portrait of a cultural icon, Clapton – The Autobiography offers his legions of admirers unprecedented access to the man behind the legend. It is one of the most compelling memoirs of our time.
Eric Clapton is married to Melia McEnery and is the father of four daughters. He lives outside London.
