Located at 1805 Geary Boulevard, the venue has gone through several incarnations: Majestic Hall (1912–1936), Ambassador Dance Hall (1936–1939), Ambassador Roller Skating Rink (1939–1952), The Fillmore Auditorium (1954–1968), the New Old Fillmore (1969–1970), and The Elite Club through the mid-1980s. Bill Graham reopened it as The Fillmore in the mid-1980s, but it remained closed after suffering structural damage in the October 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Following Graham’s death in 1991, those close to him fulfilled his final wish to reopen the original Fillmore, which welcomed audiences again on April 27, 1994.
This venue should not be confused with Fillmore West. Graham began booking shows at the Fillmore Auditorium in December 1965, but due to its limited capacity and the neighborhood’s decline, he took over the Carousel Ballroom at 10 South Van Ness Avenue—approximately one and a half miles from the original Fillmore—renaming it Fillmore West. Fillmore West operated from July 5, 1968, until July 4, 1971.
