Opened in 2004, Frederick P. Rose Hall was the world’s first facility designed specifically for the performance, education and advocacy of jazz. Its largest space, the Rose Theater, seats 1,233 and is home to the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra led by Wynton Marsalis.

For three nights in April 2011, Eric Clapton performed with Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in concerts presented as “Wynton Marsalis & Eric Clapton Play the Blues.” The first evening was the organization’s annual black-tie fundraising gala, while the remaining two public performances on Friday and Saturday were filmed and recorded.

Eric selected the songs performed, with the exception of “Layla,” which was suggested by bassist Carlos Henriquez and arranged during rehearsals as a New Orleans-style dirge that shifts into a swing.

For the engagement, Eric also brought along his long-time keyboardist Chris Stainton from his touring band, and special guest Taj Mahal also appeared. The performances were filmed and recorded and later released on September 13, 2011 on CD, DVD, Blu-ray and digital formats.
