These huge talents created a band at the Austin Rehearsal Center (ARC), that was only ever meant to have fun jamming when they were not on tour with their friend, colleague and musical inspiration, Stevie Ray Vaughan. But, Vaughan’s tragic and untimely death shocked the world and changed the Arc Angels forever. United by their common bond, the band became a musical outlet and inspiration in a time of crisis and ultimately became something much bigger and better than even they had imagined.
The band’s 1992 debut album release, Arc Angels, on Geffen Records met with much critical acclaim and managed to break on to the Billboard Top 200 chart. The sound was unique – raw and intense rock and roll steeped in the roots of Texas blues, but still radio-friendly and widely appealing. "Skill and zeal lift the Angels above the pack," said Rolling Stone. "One of the best pop / rock / blues recordings of the decade," said All Music Guide. The group toured heavily over the next three years and did two much-discussed appearances on "The Late Show with David Letterman." But at the peak of that success, the band abruptly fell apart in 1994 due to personal conflicts, drug addictions and crushing touring schedules.
They each created their own unique paths from there. Sexton made two critically acclaimed solo albums and spent several years touring with iconic musician Bob Dylan. Meanwhile, Layton recorded three albums with the Texas soul quintet, Storyville, and is known for backing artists like Buddy Guy, John Mayer and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Bramhall recorded several solo projects, toured with Roger Waters and is well-known to Eric Clapton’s fans having collaborated with him in the studio since 2000. As a solo artist, Bramhall supported EC on numerous dates in 2001 and was an integral part of Clapton’s band from 2004 until March 2009.
Widely recognized as some of the best musicians in the business and the best Austin prodigies ever developed, the Arc Angels have reformed this year to make new music and tour again. They are currently opening for Eric Clapton on his Spring dates and then will return to the U.S. for a run of summer shows. A new live CD / DVD will be released and a new studio album is also on the horizon in 2009.
