What a night at Madison Square Garden! Here’s a quick summary of what went down on Night 1 of Eric Clapton’s 2013 Crossroads Guitar Festival. The show kicked off promptly at 7:30 with Eric’s acoustic set where he was joined by long-time friend and former band-member, Andy Fairweather Low, and Vince Gill. The highlight? An emotional version of “Tears In Heaven”. They were followed by an incredible set from Stax legends Booker T and Steve Cropper. They were joined by Blake Mills, Keb Mo, Albert Lee and Matt “Guitar Murphy”. The first festival “moment”? Doyle Bramhall II’s “Green Light Girl”, which featured Sharon White and Michelle John and backing vocals. Other moments were Gary Clark Junior’s solo set performed “one-man band” style; and a jaw-dropping cover of The Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down” by John Mayer and Keith Urban. Following a stellar set from Buddy Guy, who was joined by Robert Randolph and the uber-talented 14-year old Quinn Sullivan, the Allman Brothers wrapped things up. In their set they were joined by guest stars Taj Mahal, David Hidalgo, Cesar Rojas and Eric Clapton. Their set featured a few “moments” including “Whipping Post” and Eric joining them for “Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad”.
The show, hosted by actor / comedian / bluesman Dan Akroyd, ended shortly after 12:30AM.
