Reprise Records captured the magic of the April 2011 shows dedicated to vintage blues by Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton on CD and DVD. Both formats feature selections taken from the two public concerts in New York City as well a special performance for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s annual gala. The songs were selected by Eric Clapton and arranged by Wynton Marsalis with the exception of Clapton’s “Layla,” which was requested by bassist Carlos Henriquez and arranged by Marsalis as a Crescent City dirge to tremendous results.
Clapton, Marsalis and the band nimbly navigated a diverse set list that touched on different styles, from the four-on-the-floor swing of Louis Armstrong’s “Ice Cream” and the southern slow-drag of W.C. Handy’s “Joe Turner’s Blues” to the traveling blues of “Joliet Bound” and the boogie-woogie jump of “Kidman Blues.” Special guest Taj Mahal (who opened the shows) joined the band on “Corrine, Corrina” and the New Orleans funeral standard “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” to close out each night’s performance. The DVD features a bonus performance of “Stagger Lee” from Taj Mahal’s opening set.
