Clapton’s “Dust Up” Of The Albert Continues With Steve Winwood

On 26 May, Eric Clapton kicked off the second round of 2011 concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall with his former Blind Faith bandmate, Steve Winwood. Althought the two have performed together periodically since 2008, no venue is as special as the Albert to Clapton’s legions of fans. In all, there will be five concerts with Winwood at the venue through 1 June. They are accompanied by Chris Stainton (keyboards), Steve Gadd (drums), Willie Weeks (bass), Sharon White (backing vocals) and Michelle John (backing vocals).
The first two concerts (Thursday and Friday, 27 May) were fabulous, with EC turning in amazing solo after amazing solo. They were slightly different in feel as the musician’s tweaked the set list and added a few acoustic numbers on the Friday. That’s No Way To Get Along was performed electric at the first show, but as an acoustic number on the following evening. Layla also made an appearance on night two, with Steve taking a gorgeous solo on his Martin. Both nights, the stand-out numbers where the high-energy Gimme Some Lovin’ and epic takes on Voodoo Chile. It was clear from the start that both musicians were relishing each other’s company and the relaxed easy natural empathy between both men is clearly reflected in their playing. Steve was obviously enjoying himself and his performances on guitar and Hammond were outstanding throughout the evening, which clearly inspired EC to play some fantastic fiery, tasteful solos. The setlist was more or less the same as on their previous collaborations and Steve repriesed ‘ Midland Maniac ‘ and ‘ While You Take A Chance ‘ from last years concerts and there was a very nice version of ‘ That’s No Way To Get Along ‘ from EC’s current album, which to my knowledge hasn’t been played live before, with each man trading tasteful guitar licks. – Greg Pursall
Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood started their residency at the RAH with an excellent show. Fantastic "Glad"/"Well Alright", a marvelous "Midland Maniac", a tremendously STOMPING "Crossroads", beautiful "Georgia" and luckily a song from Eric’s most recent CD ("That’s no way to get along") were among the songs played tonight. A wild "Gimmie some Lovin’" and an exuberant fire of "Voodoo Chile" left me and the audience wanting more. A great encore of "Dear Mr Fantasy" closed a fantastic show. – Nadja Teichert

As always, Where’s Eric! will be publishing set lists and reviews in the Tour Archive Section of whereseric.com but, WE! can’t do it without YOU! If you’re heading to one or more of the gigs at the Royal Albert Hall, help build the permanent Eric Clapton Tour Archive on this website. Here’s how you can help keep your fellow fans informed:
– Email details to info@whereseric.com
– Include show date and venue name
– The complete set list
– Your review
– Be sure to include your name and city so it can be featured with your review (no aliases or anonymous submissions, please. Upon request, we will use your first name and surname initial only.)
– Feel free to include information about EC’s guitars, amps and effects pedals
– You can also send your photos from the concert or of memorabilia. Things like tickets, handbills, programmes, posters or local concert advertising (the best photos may be even be published in Where’s Eric! Magazine). All photos should be at least 500K in file size; sending your original, unedited images is best. Scans of tickets, flyers etc. should be at 150 dpi.
