New Books of Interest: Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce

Both of Eric Clapton’s Cream bandmates will be the subject of new books this fall. The first, Ginger Baker’s much-anticipated no-holds-barred autobiography hits store shelves on 5 October 2009 from John Blake Publishing. In Hellraiser, the legendary drummer not only takes readers on an extensive musical journey, but discusses his formative years in South London during World War II, his early dreams of becoming a racing cyclist, to his life today on a ranch in South Africa, his love of polo and everything in between. Recently the subject of a profile in Rolling Stone, a documentary film, 10 Goal Drummer, is also in the works.

Ginger will also be performing a rare solo gig at the Jazz Cafe in London (5 Parkway, Camden) on 4 November.

Ten days after Ginger’s book is published, author Harry’s Shapiro’s book – Composing Himself: The Authorised Biography of Jack Bruce – arrives in stores from Jawbone Press on 15 October 2009. With a foreword by Eric Clapton, it covers Bruce’s classical music training, his early jazz career, his success in Cream, his later career and his troubled life. Shapiro’s work will be familiar to Clapton fans due to his two previous books on Eric – 1984’s Slowhand and it’s 1992 update, Eric Clapton – Lost In The Blues.

17 September 2009 Update: Jack Bruce’s autobiography has been delayed and will now be published in February 2010.
