Eric Clapton appeared at a special invitation-only black-tie charity event in the depths of Surrey on Saturday, 7 July 2001. Wintershall was the venue for The Picnic Concert by the Chapel on the Lake with all proceeds going to HASTE, the Heart and Stroke Trust Endeavour.
Despite torrential thunderstorms throughout the evening, the audience warmed to performances by Formula 1 Motor Racing star, Damon Hill’s band; Roger Taylor’s Band performing a medley of Queen hits and Bob Geldof who acknowledged the influence of Bob Dylan by performing rousing versions of “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue” and “Like A Rolling Stone” among others.
Comedian Rory Bremner did some amusing impressions before announcing "The All Star Band du Lac" – Gary Brooker, Andy Fairweather Low, Dave Bronze, Henry Spinetti, Mike Rutherford (Genesis), Paul “Wix” Wickens, Eric Clapton, Sam Brown and Margo Buchanan. Their first number was “Knock on Wood” with Eric on lead vocals. Each artist took turns at leading a song. The set featured The Band’s “The Weight”, Amen Corner’s “If Paradise Was Half As Nice” and Procul Harum’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale”.
Eric was in sparkling form, laughing, joking and firing off amazing solos throughout, particularly on “Gin House”, “Stormy Monday” and “Little Queenie”. He delved into his own back catalogue with rousing versions of “Before You Accuse me” and “Cocaine”, whilst “Wonderful Tonight” had the entire crowd singing along.
The evening concluded with a most impressive fireworks display and the evening had raised in excess of £200,000 the HASTE charity.
