What a first night in Toyko for Eric Clapton and His Band! Eric kicked off a 5 night run at the Nippon Budokan with a high-energy performance that wowed the audience. The set was a mix of Eric’s worldwide hits, blues and back-catalog gems which included the return of electric “Layla.”
The concert started with a firm fan-favorite: “Pretending” – with lots of wah-wah – from 1989’s Journeyman. Two more songs from the album were featured in the set: “Running On Faith” was a standout in the acoustic set mid-show while “Before You Accuse Me” was the last song before the encore. Also back in the set was “Wanna Make Love To You” which had not been performed live since 1989. Left off of Eric’s 1986 album, August, it was later released on the Crossroads box set in 1988.
For the encore, there was a special treat for the sold-out crowd. John Mayer, who performed at the Budokan on April 10 and 11, joined in for a raucus “Cocaine”.
Eric, the band and crew are back at the venue April 15, 17, 18 and 20. In May and June, there are dates in London, Berlin, Vienna, Mannheim, and Dresden. Eric wraps up his 2019 performance schedule in September with the two-night Crossroads Guitar Festival in Dallas.
